Journal Stats – Oops! the Milwaukee Journal ran an article with some seriously flawed statistics about Bethlehem Lutheran School. The point of the article was that overall private/parochial school enrollment in the Milwaukee area has declined by 11+% in the past 10 years. That fact is mainly true. To highlight the point, however, the Journal included a chart that listed private/parochial schools that have lost more than half their students in the last decade. As one of the declining schools on that list, Bethlehem is shown as going from 241 students in 1998-’99 to only 101 students this year (58.1% decline).
That fact is, of course, very wrong. The Journal used Department of Public Instruction records for only Menomonee Falls enrollment of children in K4 through Grade 8. In other words, they did not consider (or check the facts with us) that our school opened a new campus and has actually EXPANDED in Germantown where we now educate 181 of our students.
As a result our school, by God’s grace, has bucked the trend and grown healthily in the last 10 years! Here are the correct Bethlehem enrollment numbers for K4 – Gr. 8 as reported to the DPI:
1998-‘99: Enrollment is 241
2008-’09: Enrollment is 282
Percent Change: Increase of 14.5%
